Chronological Word Biblical Commentary

| | Comments (2)

As I did with NICOT and NICNT, I've decided to post a chronological ordering of the WBC volumes. I think I'm going to do this with all the long-standing series. I think it's interesting to look through how a series developed.

The two 1982 releases came out the same day. Murphy on Proverbs and the third Aune volume on Revelation came out on the same day. The revised volume 1 on Deuteronomy and vol.2 on Mark were released together. I believe I've listed each of those pairs in canonical order. The rest should all be in chronological order. I'll list the whole series together and then the Old Testament and New Testament separately.

Can you tell me specifically the difference between Craigie's Ps. 1-50 in WBC and the revised version? I have the original and I want to know if it's worth buying the updated one.

The official Thomas Nelson blurb about the new edition just says, "Dr. Tate brings Craigie's volume up to date by incorporating references to the very latest in biblical scholarship on the Psalms." I don't think that's all that helpful, but it's something. It doesn't necessarily mean anything more than that Tate wrote an additional bibliography to be added to the end, as WBC has done with other second editions (e.g. John). Claude Mariottini says Tate "wrote a supplement" and didn't actually revise any of Craigie's work. So if you got the new one and sold or gave away the old one, you wouldn't be losing any of Craigie's original text. I don't know what this supplement includes other than what the Thomas Nelson blurb above says, but it seems to be something Mariottini can review, which makes me think it's more than just bibliography.

I can tell you that the original is 380 pages and the new one 416. That's not a lot of new material, especially if some of it is just updating the bibliographies. Mariottini does say that Tate wrote a supplement, though, so I think it probably has an essay by him on advances in scholarship on Psalms 1-50 since Craigie's volume was first published. I just don't know how much is that and how much is bibliographical additions.
