Transparent Aluminum

Right out of Star Trek IV. Now we can transport whales more easily.

No, no. As one reader from Slashdot pointed out, this is *alumina* (aluminum oxide) that is being referenced, not aluminum. Alumina is a raw ingredient in manufacturing the eventual product (which contains other things like lanthanum and gadolinium), so this doesn't even technically qualify as *just* aluminum-related compounds.

On the other hand, transporting whales can be a fun career. Just remember: "It's not just the whales. It's the water."

I know it's not really transparent aluminum, but scifi fans have to have some fun when a new scientific discovery comes close to a scifi device from his youth. Imagine what fans of the original series from their youth thought about cell phones that flip open!
