Why you should never put your picture on the Internet

This is excellent. I found links to it this morning on both InstaPundit and Josh Claybourn within minutes of each other, so I'm giving credit to both.

Update (June 2006): That page has been dead for quite a while, but I found a new location for it.

This post reminds me of a recent post in Slashdot (in case you have never visited www.slashdot.org, it is a site dedicated to "News for Nerds, Stuff That Matters") which talks about a recent attempt to locate Noah's Ark in Turkey. The founder and leader of a non-profit organization has assembled an expedition to search around Mt. Ararat for the Ark. What was curious was the leader's insistence that, once pictures are made available, everyone would believe that it is true and his mission will have been a success.

I don't know about you, but the availability and caliber of photography manipulation tools are frighteningly good these days, as so aptly demonstrated here. Besides, the Lord never said that the Ark will remain until today, and all that stuff made out of wood without Thompson's Water Seal... well, let's just say that it's not likely that our Don Quixote will find anything.

That the fake pictures supposedly of Abu Ghraib abuses convinced so many people also speaks against this. I haven't researched any of that well enough to know how many of the pictures or how many of the worst ones were the doctored ones, but I know some of what they did involved pictures from porn sites merged with pictures from the soldiers' cameras. Bloggers seem to have picked up on it quickly, but politicians were waving these pictures around with outrage at what the soldiers in them supposedly did, and newspapers were reporting it as fact.
